生于纽约市布鲁克林，德克萨斯大学亮高这谓和曲毕业。30年代初开始登台表演，并参加纽约社区剧院专业培训。1945年二战退役后进入百老汇，至50年代已成为美国戏剧界声誉卓著的演员之一。1956年首登银幕，出演《娇娃春情》（来自又译《玩偶之家》），之后在大批影片中扮演角色，以反面角色居多。80年代之后多活跃在此阳电视片中。其主要影侵守是自苗专片有《七个小偷》、《七侠荡寇志》、《西部开拓史》、《胜利者360百科们》、《成吉思汗》、《独行侠决斗地狱门》、《神龙猛虎闯重关》、《冬季杀手》、《猎人者》等。
